“Curtis is a force to be reckoned with…” – Ego Jacket – Midsumma Festival 2018 – Stage Whispers Review

By Phillip Lee Curtis. Midsumma. MC Showroom, L1/48 Clifton St, Prahran. Jan 31 – Feb 4, 2018.

Ego Jacket will give you a powerful beyond belief performance. It is an actual purchasable jacket. And it is eponymous with Ego Jacket, a solo energy driven show by Phillip Lee Curtis; a great title and a fascinating cathartic rock infused cabaret show that leaves you in awe of Curtis. It is enthralling to watch; such a deluge of psychological emotions. He is a twenty something struggling with some deep seeded issues in his life.

He comes out on stage wearing a cropped titled leather jacket as a symbol of his strength. He prances around the stage with narcissistic rock star pride. He is complemented with an arresting audio –visual show influenced by rock and pop divas including Lady Gaga, Pink, Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave.

Curtis is adamant about moving on with his life and wants everyone to know.

In just a couple of years he has managed to combat his obesity, beat his severe depression and come out openly as a gay man. Finally, he tells the audience after recurring bouts of these problems and countless visits to his psychologist he feels he might have beaten down his demons.

Ego Jacket is mantra to Curtis’s high-energy performance. He confirms to his audience that he has closed that door and moved on to the next chapter in his life.

Curtis is a force to be reckoned with and it’s great to watch such a zesty and invigorating show.

Go watch Curtis perform in his very own ego jacket!

It is a fun show!
