Long before democracy or science, before the world could explain plague and poison, there was a myth that tried. A city on its knees. A leader desperate for truth. Over 2000 years since Sophocles’ exploration of power, fate, and truth through the myth of Oedipus Rex, this production is as relevant as ever. Now in an era defined by rising temperatures, collapsing ecosystems and corporate greed, Sophocles’ question stands more urgent than ever. What does it mean to discover you are the source of your people’s suffering?
This new staging of Oedipus reimagines the myth in the aftermath of ecological disaster, where prophecy and science blur and the gods feel far distant. This ruined Thebes is haunted by plague and scarcity, where ancient prophecy meets environmental ruin. This production explores guilt, blindness, and the price of leadership. Sophocles’ myth has become a warning: a meditation on blindness, chosen and inherited, and the unbearable weight of understanding too late.
