Living The Dream | Melbourne Fringe 2026

A darkly funny new play about home ownership, gender roles and the Australian Dream.

When James moves into a rural Victorian housing estate, his neighbours seem hell-bent on keeping him there, using alcohol, romance, and cricket, to entrap him. Either that, or they're just really keen to welcome a fresh face to Arcadia Place.

Living The Dream is simultaneously comedically ridiculous and painfully confronting. It explores the 'Australian Dream' of home ownership, and the hegemonic values that are implied, expected, and demanded by it. The show focuses on traditional Australian gender roles, and how they are used to reinforce inequitable power structures, and sex-based discrimination. The work seeks to ask the question: what actually is the Australian Dream, and is it something we truly want?
